Intention. 

It is our intent at Cherry Tree Academy to provide all of our children with a high quality education in MFL, which develops their love of learning in French and its culture. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children's primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written French, confidence to speak French with others and know how important other languages can be in their future. 

Implementation.

Our French curriculum is designed to develop not only our children's language skills, but also their love of learning a language. It progressively develops language skills, through regular taught lessons. This allows the children to acquire new language then use and apply it in a range of different scenarios and and topics. Children and encouraged and supported to 

develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing and games. As their confidence and knowledge grow, children start to record their work in books with writing, pictures and captions. All children in KS2 receive French lessons by their class teacher. We currently follow the    scheme to support our teaching of French. 

We have previously celebrated the European day of Languages in September where the children took part in a range of activities around languages and cultures. All children at Cherry Tree took part in PE lessons and cooking lessons as well as lots of other fun and interactive games. This year the children also took part in a language quiz.

We are also very lucky to have regular visits from our French teacher, Mrs Anderton, who is based in the MAT. She has conducted various year group tasks, sessions and competitions for all classes.

Impact.

Our French curriculum will ensure all pupils will develop key language learning skills, set out by the national curriculum, as well as a love for languages and learning about culture.

These are as follows:

1. understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. 

2. speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

3. can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt. 

4. discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Pupil voice is also used to develop the MFL curriculum. This is conducted by the MFL lead, Mrs Dunn, and the School Council.
