Year 3 - Willow

Welcome to Year 3

Class Teacher: Miss Birch
Contact email: Katewiffen-birch@inspiresmat.co.uk

Our class book is Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure - Book 1 by Alex T. Smith Book

Our classroom is a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment where every child feels safe, respected, and valued. We follow our classroom rules, show kindness and respect to others, and work together to create a positive learning atmosphere. We encourage one another, celebrate achievements big and small, and support each other when challenges arise. By working as a team, we help everyone to feel confident, motivated, and proud of their learning.

Things to remember;

PE days

Willow class are scheduled to have PE on Mondays , however sometimes they may do additional PE sessions so we encourage all children to have their PE kit in school all week.

Daily: reading records, correct uniform, water bottles and a healthy snack

Summer Term 2026:

Homework: We will be setting the children arithmetic/maths and reading homework each term. The children can bring their completed homework in when they have completed it so we can celebrate and share what the children have created. Please read with your child and encourage them to play TTRS at home as this makes a significant difference across the year, especially when transitioning into year 4. If the children read 4 times a week, there is a reward of dojos.

Spellings

Children will receive a list of spelling words in their homework books which link to the phase 5 sounds. Your child will also receive some tricky words and some words from the year 3/4 statutory spelling list below. Please ensure your child learns these each week for a weekly test.

English:

This term we will be focusing on 'a cautionary tale'  and 'our tower'. This will encourage the pupils to work on their poetry skills and to plan a fantasy story. I am looking forward to seeing what they create.

As we continue our class books, please feel free to ask your child for book updates on the story so far!

Reading;

As we use a new framework 'Literacy Tree' we now have new story books in school. This means that as we study a book in class, we have 1 book between 2, which means the children can access the text throughout the day and share the book closely with a friend to discuss various details. We focus on Retrieval skills, Vocabulary, Prediction, Explanation, Inference and summarising.

Maths:

We are currently learning about Time, including reading the clock to the closest minute, am and pm and both analogue and digital time. After this we will be working on angles and finally to finish the school year, we will look at bar charts.

We will also be focusing on times tables, so please encourage them to learn them, they can also do this on Times Table Rockstars (TTRS). This term we are focusing on our 6 time tables and our 8 time tables. Once the pupils turn their charts green they will receive a special badge and certificate in assembly. So watch this space.

In Maths, we are following the structure of the White Rose scheme. White Rose is a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths, well linked to the developing of a positive growth mindset and strong reasoning and problem solving skills. ALL children have access to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) so please download the app and begin (or continue) practicing at home- we cannot stress enough the importance of the children's arithmetic and times table skills, especially as they move further up KS2.

Science:

This term we are studying 'pollination'. Learning about seeds and pollination in Year 3 is important because it helps children understand how plants grow and reproduce, which is a key part of the natural world around them. At this age, pupils are naturally curious, and studying plants gives them hands-on experiences that build scientific thinking and observation skills.

Geography:

In Geography, we will be learning the process of the water cycle. This is important because it helps pupils understand how water moves around the Earth and supports all living things. By learning about evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection, children can see how rain is formed and how water is continually recycled in nature.

Understanding the water cycle also helps pupils recognise why water is essential for plants, animals, and humans. It helps with understanding different types of weather and climate  and make connections between science and everyday life, such as rain, clouds, rivers, and drinking water.

RE:

We will be exploring key questions during RE and this term our focus will be on 'What difference does being a Muslim make to daily life?

Art:

We are studying Architecture. This unit is about creating elevations of buildings using one point perspective and two point perspectives.

Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to updating you with all the things we're doing during a busy, engaging rest of the year here in Willow class!
